Sevens fans' behaviour problem

The IRB accepts that alcohol-related behaviour is a serious issue at the Wellington Sevens tournament after a number of incidents this year.

A total of 270 people were evicted from the Westpac Stadium last weekend – the majority due to alcohol-fuelled behaviour.

IRB General Manager of Sevens Avan Lee says it's about fine tuning the balance between fun and things getting out of hand.

"We don't want to be the fun police and ruin the amazing event that Wellington Rugby and New Zealand Rugby have built up over 15 years but we can't sit back and let it get out of control either.

"I don't think it is at the moment but clearly there are some areas which require some attention."

Lee says Wellington has one more event left to organise on the current cycle, and the NZRU has a major role in deciding which city hosts the tournament thereafter.
