Boks to face Scotland without star scrumhalf

SQUAD UPDATE: The Springboks will be without Faf de Klerk when they face Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The 27-year-old scrumhalf was released from the Bok squad on Monday to play for his club Sale Sharks this weekend.

He is also unlikely to be available for the Boks’ final Test in November against Wales in Cardiff.

De Klerk was in the No.9 jersey in South Africa’s 29-26 victory over France. He missed the Boks’ loss to England a week earlier as it fell outside the Test window.

Ivan van Zyl was the starting scrumhalf in the match against England, while Embrose Papier has been the backup scrumhalf for the last two Tests.

Louis Schreuder is the other scrumhalf in the Bok squad.

Meanwhile, Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth is set to return to full training this week after recovering from a foot injury he sustained against England at Twickenham two weeks ago.

The experienced lock was not considered for the Test against France last Saturday, with the Springbok medical team giving him time to recover as there are still two tour matches, against Scotland and Wales, remaining.

Rassie Erasmus, Director of Rugby, confirmed on Monday that Warren Whiteley (loose forward) is in doubt for Saturday’s clash against Scotland at Murrayfield because of a calf problem.
