Sharks' Swiel signs for Quins

Sharks flyhalf Tim Swiel has been announced Harlequins' the latest signing and will join the club as injury cover for Ben Botica.

Swiel joined the club this week and will return to The Sharks in February 2015.

Botica injured his shoulder during a League match earlier this month and has had surgery which will rule him out until the New Year.

Somerset born Swiel, represented Western Province at Under-16, U18, U21 and senior levels before making the swim up the coast to join the Sharks in 2013.

The English-qualified flyhalf represented The Sharks against Saracens in January and has played on three occasions in this year's Currie Cup.

"I am looking forward to joining Harlequins during The Sharks' off-season.

"Due to injury, I did not get a lot of game time during this year's Currie Cup and my coaches at The Sharks and I agree that regular game time during this off-season will enhance my preparation and provide the necessary momentum needed for the 2015 Super Rugby season.

"I believe that it can only be beneficial for other young players to get similar opportunities to experience another rugby culture during their off-season, which will contribute positively to their growth and experience in the game.  I thank The Sharks and Harlequins for granting me this exciting opportunity," Swiel said.

Sharks CEO John Smit expressed his joy at Swiel's opportunity to gain valuable experience.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Tim, and I am certain that this experience at a top club will provide him with great memories and will bode well for him in the future," Smit said.

Harlequins Director of Rugby Conor O’Shea said he was delighted with the signing of Swiel and thinks the pivot will be a perfect fit.

"While we are very disappointed to lose Ben Botica to injury, I am delighted to be able to bring in someone of Tim's ability from The Sharks at such short notice.

"Tim is a player with real 'X' factor who we are sure will fit within how we play and we look forward to welcoming him to the Stoop," he said.
