Wood stamped out for eight weeks

Gloucester prop Nick Wood was handed an eight-week ban for stamping on Saracens loose forward Jacques Burger during last Sunday's Premiership match between the clubs.

Wood, sent off in just the second minute by referee Wayne Barnes, cannot play again until November 13, the Rugby Football Union announced in a statement following a disciplinary hearing in Bristol, southwest England.

He saw red after he stamped on Namibia international Burger's head at Allianz Park.

Saracens went on to win the game 44-12.

Gloucester – currently bottom of the Premiership with just one point from two games – will be without loosehead prop Wood's services for five league matches and two European Cup fixtures.

Wood will be unavailable for domestic league clashes against Northampton, Newcastle, Exeter, Bath and Wasps, as well as European Cup pool fixtures with French club Perpignan and Irish province Munster.

Earlier this week, Burger said he had "no hard feelings" towards Wood despite the stamp.

The case was heard by a panel of Christopher Quinlan, Mike Curling and John Doubleday.
