Powerhouse centre signs for Sharks as 'underrated' lock leaves Durban
TRANSFER NEWS: The Sharks continued their big signing spree with the confirmation that Andre Esterhuizen will be returning to Durban.
He is the latest Bok to sign for the Sharks after the franchise unveiled the signings of Trevor Nyakane and Jason Jenkins earlier this week.
Before those players were announced, the Sharks also confirmed the signings of Jordan Hendrikse and Emmanuel Tshituka from the Lions.
Earlier this month, Harlequins revealed that Esterhuizen will depart the club at the end of the 2023/24 season and return to South Africa for family reasons.
He has been with the English club since 2020 when he first left the Sharks.
Esterhuizen was also part of last year’s World Cup-winning Springbok squad.
Meanwhile, Sale Sharks have signed lock Hyron Andrews from the Durban-based outfit on a short-term deal until the end of the current season.
The 28-year-old joins as cover for Jonny Hill, who suffered a season-ending injury against La Rochelle in January.
“Hyron is a superb athlete and a great player who we believe has been underrated and overshadowed over a few years due to the strength-in-depth and quality that exists in the second row within the South African system,” said Sale boss Alex Sanderson.
“He pairs his prowess in the line-out with mobility around the park that will dovetail with the physicality we already have in our back five.”
