Another Cheetahs player cops a suspension

DISCIPLINARY NEWS: Cheetahs loose forward, Jasper Wiese, will not be touring with the team to Wales next week for their PRO14 round seven clash against the Ospreys in Wales.

Wiese has been suspended for three weeks for the red card he received during the Cheetahs 17-30 defeat to the Cardiff Blues nearly two weeks ago.

The player illegally cleaned out the Cardiff flyhalf, Jason Tovey, at a ruck in the 15th minute of the clash at Cardiff Arms Park.

In the process, Wiese made contact with the head and neck region of the pivot and with a high degree of force as well.

Wiese appeared before a PRO14 disciplinary committee on Wednesday.

He was the second player to receive a red card during that particular tour after the centre Dries Swanepoel was sanctioned for a very similar offense during the opening game against Connacht in Galway.

Due to his clean record, Swanepoels’ suspension of six weeks was reduced to three weeks. And according to OFM Sport’s, the same counted for Wiese, who up until the game against Cardiff hadn’t even received a yellow card.

Swanepoel is serving the last match of his suspension, however, he will not be available until the end of January as he underwent surgery to repair damage to his achilles tendon.

Wiese will miss next week’s match against the Ospreys in Swansea, as well as the match against Zebre in Parma on January 4 and the derby against the Southern Kings on January 25 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

This means that the new signing at the Cheetahs, Chris Massyn, is almost sure to go on tour next week and will likely play off the bench, while Junior Pokomela, Sias Koen and Gerhard Olivier will start in the loose trio.

The Cheetahs, apart from Ruan Pienaar and the coach, Hawies Fourie, fly out to Wales on Wednesday and face the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

Pienaar and Fourie depart for Wales on Monday due to PRO14 commitments.
