The 21-year-old Fijian signed a two-year deal with Connacht in May and was due to arrive in Ireland from the Waikato Chiefs next month.

However, following Reece’s recent court case where he admitted guilt for domestic abuse has prompted the Pro14 team and IRFU to cancel the contract.

“Connacht Rugby and the IRFU have taken the decision, following contact with Sevu Reece in relation to the circumstances of a recent court appearance, not to proceed with a contract to play with the province,” said Connacht Rugby in an official statement.

“Connacht Rugby and the IRFU will make no further comment in regards to the matter,”

Reece was granted a discharge without conviction over the domestic violence incident but it seems like the the scrutiny that has enveloped Irish Rugby over the last year following Ulster’s rape case played a part in the decision to terminate the contract.
