Glasgow Warriors’ rebrand does not please their fans

REACTION: Pro14 runners up Glasgow Warriors beckoned a “new era” on Tuesday by revealing their new badge ahead of next season.

It is the first rebrand that the club have made since they renamed themselves Glasgow Warriors back in 2005, and this new logo plays upon the same theme.

This is the new badge:

As expected when there is a decision like this, the new badge has been met by widespread criticism by fans on social media. The Warriors would surely have prepared for a backlash from fans, with many saying there was nothing wrong with the old logo, and have compared the new one to a Scooby Doo villain.

This is what the fans have said on Twitter:

While the vast majority are not happy with this new badge, there are some fans who have got on board with the change. Some others appreciate that a rebranding like this is necessary in rugby now. Seeing as the badge has more or less stayed the same since 1996, some feel that this move was necessary.

This is a decision that other clubs in the United Kingdom have made in recent seasons, and it has worked. Both Gloucester and Bristol made major changes this time last year, with the Cherry and Whites changing their badge, and Bristol renaming themselves the Bristol Bears.

Both clubs had the most successful seasons that they have had in years, with Bristol receiving much more support than they have in the past. This may just be a coincidence, but it could suggest that there is a method behind a controversial rebrand like this.

Nonetheless, this is a strategy by Glasgow that will receive a lot of criticism now, but will likely be forgotten as the season goes on, particularly if the club have yet another successful campaign at Scotstoun.
