Landman gets six-week ban

Rynard Landman, the Newport Gwent Dragons lock, appeared today before an independent Pro12 disciplinary committee and recieved a six-week ban for striking with the elbow.

Landman was handed down this sentance following a red card issued during the first half of the Pro12 match between Newport Gwent Dragons and Connacht on February 22 for an alleged strike with the elbow.

The Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Achille Reali (Italy), along with David Martin and George Spotswood (both from Ireland), listened to representations by and on behalf of the player, viewed TV footage of the incident and reviewed various reports.

The Committee found that Landman had committed an act of foul play for which he had received the red card and considered it to be at the high end of World Rugby's sanctions for this type of offence, which carries an entry-point of nine weeks.

The Committee considered the aggravating and mitigating factors including the player's unblemished record, and reduced the entry point by three weeks and imposed a six week suspension.

The player is suspended from playing until midnight on April 19, taking into account two "down” weeks and has the right of appeal.
