Munster reveals 'bleak' news on Bok import

POST-MATCH REACTION: Munster paid a dear price for their 25-27 loss to Irish rivals Leinster in Dublin at the weekend.

Much has been made of Munster’s mid-season signings and South Africa duo Rudolph Snyman and Damian de Allende – who both made their debuts.

However, Snyman disappeared after just seven minutes with a knee injury, suffered while stealing a Leinster line-out.

The post-match news from Munster’s South African coach Johann van Graan was rather bleak.

The 25-year-old looked in considerable pain as he sat on the sideline with an ice pack on his damaged knee and van Graan confirmed that the burly lock was going to go for a scan.

“It looks pretty serious,” Van Graan told a post-match media briefing.

“I’m very disappointed to lose him after seven minutes of the game.”

And the bad news did not end there.

“David Kilcoyne came off with an ankle.

“Jean Kleyn has a neck injury as well.

“The three of them will go for scans as quickly as possible.

“That’s rugby. That’s what this game is about. You’ve got to come through tough times.”

Munster will be in action once again when they take on Connacht this coming Sunday week.

However, an injury update on Snyman, Kilcoyne and Kleyn won’t be provided till later this week.

For new Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber the news of Snyman’s injury will be of major concern.

Although South Africa’s participation in the Rugby Championship in a bio-bubble in New Zealand in November has yet to be confirmed, he will be desperate to have the World Cup-winning lock, Snyman, available.

Given the lack of rugby this year, facing battle-hardened New Zealand and Australian teams will require in-form and fit players.

The South African-based Boks won’t be able to start playing till the middle of next month, which makes the Europe-based players – like Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert and Lodewyk de Jager – so much more valuable.
