Neck injury: Williams move to city

Owen Williams has been transferred to the Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff as the Wales centre continues to recover from a serious neck injury.

Cardiff Blues star Williams was hurt while taking part in the inaugural World Club 10s tournament in Singapore last month.

The 22-year-old suffered a significant injury to his cervical vertebrae and spinal cord and underwent surgery in Singapore, where he was joined by his parents and brother.

He was then taken to the University Hospital of Wales by air ambulance, but will now receive treatment at Rookwood's specialist spinal rehabilitation unit.

"Owen was safely moved to the Welsh Spinal Injuries and Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the hospital in Llandaff this week to continue his long-term recovery," a Cardiff statement read.

"Cardiff Blues and the Williams family would like to thank staff at University Hospital Wales who had been caring for Owen since his return from Singapore.

"Messages of support from the rugby community and wider world continue to be a huge source of inspiration for Owen, his family and friends at this time.

"Cardiff Blues would like to thank the media for the privacy they have shown Owen Williams and his family over the last two and a half weeks and ask that this continues to be respected."

Williams was injured while playing for the Blues in a third place play-off game against Asia Pacific Dragons.

He has so far won four Wales caps, making his debut on last year's tour of Japan, while he scored a try in the 17-7 Millennium Stadium victory over Tonga in November.
