Rees signs new deal with Cardiff Blues
The 60-cap front-row, who joined the region in 2013, made 18 appearances during the 2015-16 season.
He remains an integral member of the squad, bringing a wealth of experience from the Test arena where he also won three caps for the British & Irish Lions in 2009, and has now been rewarded for his fine form with a new contract.
Head coach Danny Wilson said: “I’m delighted Matthew will remain on board with Cardiff Blues.
"During the 2015-16 season he has played some good rugby and proved he has plenty left in the tank.
“His diligence and professionalism, both on and off the pitch, has ensured he has remained in good shape.
“Matthew will not only bring needed experience and leadership but will have a mentoring and coaching role to our younger hookers.
“We now have plenty of depth and a good balance between experience and youth.”
Since joining Wales’ Capital Region from the Scarlets, Rees has racked up 52 appearances.
He had no second thoughts on putting pen to paper on fresh terms and is determined to help the region climb back into the Pro12 top six and the Champions Cup.
The 35-year-old said: “It is great to re-sign with Cardiff Blues.
"After an enjoyable season it’s a pleasure to be asked to stay and I feel I still have a lot to offer both on and off the field.
“I enjoy working with Danny, he is a very astute coach and the attention to detail he has brought this year has been a big factor in the league improvement.
“With the way we finished the season and the players we have brought in, hopefully we can really push on.
"As the capital region it is important that we get back to making the top six and Champions Cup rugby.”
