The World Cup-winning Springbok Snyman tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament while making his Munster debut against Leinster in Dublin.

The 25-year-old left the field after falling hard in the seventh minute during the 25-27 defeat to Leinster.

The big Springbok, who was signed alongside fellow World Cup winner Damian de Allende as the two big moves in the off-season for Munster, has been sidelined since August.

He is expected to be out of action for six to nine months.

The former Bulls lock is likely to return to the field at the end of the Pro14 season – missing the majority for Munster’s campaign.

While the Springboks will hope that he makes a full recovery just in time for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa next July and August.

“It was a bit of a surprise and a disaster for me because it’s not the way I wanted to start my career with Munster,” Snyman said, adding: “Going off after five or seven minutes is not the perfect way to do that.

“But in saying that, everyone has been very supportive. I must say, everyone has made it a little bit easier. It is a bit difficult, trying to get to know everyone during lockdown especially if you can’t go and visit anyone.

“Luckily, around here everyone is friendly and very welcoming,”

When asked about the knee injury, Snyman said:  ” I must say Ray [McGinley, Munster physiotherapist], who is doing the rehab with me, is very good and we are making a lot of progress with it.

“I have actually started working a bit harder in the gym, for a change.

“I am not a big fan of the gym, to be honest, so this is a good time for me to improve a bit on my gym work.

“It’s actually good to be excited to go to a gym session for a change,”
