Who to take over the King(dom)?

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Just a day after Deon Davids’ resignation, the Southern Kings head to social media seeking a suitable replacement.

The South African franchise posted the vacant position via their Twitter and Facebook pages requesting all applicants to send in their CV along with a cover letter no later than Monday, June 24.

According to the Herald Live, Rory Duncan is in the running to take up the role as head coach of the Southern Kings.

Earlier this year, Duncan was linked to the job at the Cheetahs after Franco Smith took up an offer as the head coach of the Italian national side.

However, with the Southern Kings are also in dire need of a mentor, the 41-year-old Duncan could redirect his destination to Port Elizebeth.

Jake White is another name that always seems to pop up when South African sides are seeking a solid coach – and in the Kings’ case, it’s no different.

The World Cup-winning coach will be out of contract at the end of the year when current All Blacks coach Steve Hansen takes over at Japanese club Toyota Verblitz.

Despite White’s availability and an impeccable CV, the Kings will have to dig deep in their pockets if they want to lure this type of calibre to their shores.

The 55-year-old coached the Springboks in 54 Tests between 2004 and 2007, winning 36, losing 17 with one draw for a win-ratio of 67 percent.

Other available candidates and more within the reasonable price range are Hawies Fourie (Stellenbosch University), Jimmy Stonehouse (Pumas), Chester Williams (University of the Western Cape) and Corniel van Zyl (Cheetahs assistant coach).

While one should keep in mind that former Springbok coach Peter De Villiers and Robbie Fleck, who has bid farewell to his four-year stint at the Stormers, are both available to take over the reins at the struggling Pro14 side.

Whoever makes the shortlist one thing is certain, SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus will assist in the process of identifying the best possible candidates to replace Deon Davids.
