Wilson happy with Cardiff's one-point victory

The Blues had led for large periods of the game, going into half-time 17-10 up thanks to Tom James’ try double, but the Men in Red fought back to lead before Fish gave Wilson’s men an unassailable advantage.

Blues were able to hand Sam Warburton a first appearance of the season from the bench, but it was fellow back-rower Josh Navidi who was named Man of the Match.

And Wilson could not hide his joy after what he called a ‘special’ win.

"To come here and get a win is special because it’s a very tough place to play. To back up last week with this is outstanding," Wilson said.

"We had a 20 to 30 minute period where we were really under pressure and struggled with their kick-to-compete pressure.

"But we said if we could get them to kick a bit longer we would have space for our exciting back-three players to run back into.

"They kicked longer and we scored two tries from it – one from Matthew Morgan’s bit of footwork and Tom James’ second in the first-half,"

Wilson’s men have opened up their Pro12 account with two wins from two and the Blues head coach is thrilled by their burgeoning strength in depth.

"We have built a squad that has a strong bench if we can keep everyone fit. We had 17 internationals in the match-day 23 and when you can bring guys like Lloyd Williams and Matthew Rees, Josh Turnbull, Sam Warburton and so on they will give you an impact," he said.

"We are improving on areas from last season and there was a huge defensive shift during some periods of pressure on our own line.

"For us to come here, score three good tries, be tactically just about right and finish the game out – in the last ten minutes we managed the game really well and kicked the right kicks – is pretty pleasing.

"To come here and get a win is really special and they deserve it.

"It was a complete 23-man performance, with several replacements making a significant impact after some of the starting XV emptied the tank,”
