Pride restored for Pumas

Argentina coach Santiago Phelan believes that his team restored some pride in their 22-17 defeat to the Springboks in Mendoza.

The Pumas showed great mental strength to bounce back from the massive defeat they suffered in Soweto the week before to push the Springboks all the way in front of their home crowd.

Although they only earned one log point for their efforts, Argentina showed a massive improvement at a ground where they were unlucky not to get more than a 16-16 draw against South Africa last season.

Phelan said that the key to his side's improved performance was the difference in their mentality which had been a big focus in the build-up.

"We worked hard on the mentality of the players during the build-up and the results were evident – a much improved performance from a highly committed team," he said.

Although they fell five points short of the Boks Phelan was highly satisfied and said that he could not have expected more from his players.

"Unfortunately, we could not win, but every Argentine player can be proud of his performance. I could not have asked for more from them."

After a one-week break, the southern hemisphere championship resumes on September 7 with New Zealand hosting Argentina and Australia at home to South Africa.
