In South Africa the Currie Cup gets started, a wonderful competition dating back to 1891 though now been buffeted aside by Super Rugby,. It must be a grievous rugby sin to devalue a great competition with its marvellous traditions.
The referees have shown practical respect by appointing their best two referees to Currie Cup matches – Craig Joubert and Jaco Peyper.
In South Africa, too, there is the Final of the Varsity Cup with Lourens van der Merwe to referee it.
In the seventh round of Super Rugby there are referees making their debut – Shuhei Kubo of Japan, who has refereed six Tests, and the two scrumhalves who both played Super Rugby – Jamie Nutbrown of the Crusaders and Nic Berry of the Reds. All three of these newboys have been given experienced referees to assist them. Kubo has Craig Joubert, Berry Angus Gardner and Nutbrown Chris Pollock.
