MIA Kenyan risks Sevens spot
Kenya Sevens’ top-try scorer Collins Injera is at a risk of being dropped for the Hong Kong and Japan legs of the IRB World Series after being handed a lengthy suspension by his club for failing to honour a national league match.
The 26-year-old wing, who is ranked fifth in the IRB Sevens all-time try-scoring standings, was last week suspended by his Mwamba club for eight weeks, and was subsequently dropped from the national Sevens team.
"Rugby has its values and we should never lose touch with the laws of the game. Discipline is just one of them," said Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Mwangi Muthee.
Injera, who had been named the captain for the Hong Kong and Japan Sevens, has not joined the team since they resumed training earlier this week, but Muthee said the decision whether the player will participate in the two tournaments will be determined by head coach Mike Friday, who is expected in the country next week.
"It's up to Injera and his coach Mike Friday to decide their engagements and seek the way forward," said Muthee.
The player, who is faced with the demands of juggling his rugby career with his studies at a Nairobi college and an internship with a local company, is reported to have requested the KRU to step in with his club before he can resume training with the national team.
