Treu quits Kenyan Sevens

Paul Treu will step down from his role as Kenya Sevens head coach after this weekend's Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens.

Treu is a former South African Sevens coach and leaves the African nation after only one year in charge amid much controversy aimed at him.

He said in a statement: "It has been a very difficult decision, but I believe it is the right decision for me at this stage in my life."

He added: "It has just been over a year since I accepted the offer from the Kenya Rugby Union to take charge of the team.

"We have experienced interesting times, that is for sure.

"We have had challenges; highs and lows. We know that this is the nature of sport and the game of rugby that we all love.

"If it was not too easy, we wouldn't know the joy of achieving our goals and knowing we worked hard to make them happen."

He thanked the Kenya Rugby Union and its Chairman Mwangi Muthee.

"I commend Muthee's leadership during some challenging times."

Muthee thanked Treu for his service, saying: "I must thank Paul for the professional manner in which he has conveyed his decision to me.

"Personally I admire his bravery of venturing into unfamiliar waters; leaving the comforts of an advanced rugby nation such as South Africa.

"A lot of Kenyans respect and will salute him for that.

“We saw a man determined to succeed, his, his vision, character and discipline was remarkable and should rest assured that there are many who learnt from him.

"Paul will leave a mark and a foundation on which the country’s Sevens development program can build on.”

There have been a number of rumours about the position of Treu with the Kenya Rugby Union with pressure mounting from the fans regarding performances on the field, first during the Safaricom Sevens and latterly the start of the World Sevens Series.

Much of the pressure has been unfairly directed at Treu with fans and supporters alike wanting immediate results.

Not only has the strike and player availability been a problem but also the likes of Oscar Ouma and Horace Otieno leaving for Sri Lanka has further underlined some of the issues facing Treu when trying to get his strongest side on the field.

The question now arises on who will take the Kenya Sevens squad forward over the remaining six tournaments of the World Series and most importantly the African Olympic Qualifier.
