Cotter surprised to lose to Wales

Vern Cotter believes his improving Scotland side deserved more from their 26-23 defeat to Wales at Murrayfield.

Cotter saw his side fall to a narrow defeat – their second in as many Six Nations games – despite spending large periods of the last 15 minutes of the game inside the Welsh 22-metre.

Cotter surprised to lose to WalesScotland opened up a 10-3 lead mid-way through the first-half courtesy of a Stuart Hogg try and a Greig Laidlaw penalty but in the end efforts from Rhys Webb and Jonathan Davies and four Leigh Halfpenny penalties proved too much to overcome.

And, despite defeat, the Kiwi head coach insists there are positives that his side can take into their clash with Italy in a fortnight's time.

"It is a hard one to take," said Cotter.

"I thought we finished well and applied a lot of pressure, we got ourselves into situations to score points but not everything was perfect and we will have to have a look back at that.

"I thought we got better in several sectors of the game which I think will help us move forward to the next game but overall we are a little frustrated.

"We were obviously on top and dominating at the end and I was surprised we didn't get our reward but the game is over so we will look at the good things we did.

"I think our game is developing positively and we will stay positive with it.

"We will look to improve and we look forward to the challenge of the Italy game."
