Jenkins on road to recovery in Poland

Loosehead prop Gethin Jenkins will be the only Wales player to miss the start of their training camp in Poland, but is expected to be fit for the Six Nations opener against Ireland.

Jenkins injured his knee in Cardiff Blues’ Heineken Cup win over Racing Metro on Sunday but the Welsh Rugby Union says he may link up with the rest of the 35-man squad later this week.

Wales are hoping that the tough Polish camp, which includes sub-zero degree cryotherapy sessions and brought them such good results at the World Cup, will have them in top condition for the upcoming Six Nations.

Flyhalf Rhys Priestland and flanker Dan Lydiate both flew with the squad to Gdansk on Monday despite being injured at the weekend.

The WRU says “both players will train in Poland whilst managing their injuries.”

Wales has already lost forwards Luke Charteris, Alun-Wyn Jones and Lloyd Burns to injury, but the WRU says center Jamie Roberts is “progressing well” in his recovery from a knee problem.

Fullback Lee Byrne has recovered from the thumb injury he sustained in his club Clermont’s Heineken Cup match against Ulster and will take full part in training despite initial concerns.
