Police probe 'homophobic' tweet

British police have announced that they are investigating claims that Welsh referee Nigel Owens was the target of homophobic abuse on Twitter.

The offensive remarks were allegedly posted after Owens officiated England's 55-35 victory over France in the Six Nations finale at Twickenham at the weekend.

"This follows a number of complaints made by members of the public. The tweet concerned has now been removed from the page. The investigation is at an early stage," said Dyfed-Powys Police in a statement on Sunday.

Owens, who is openly gay, took to Twitter on Sunday, writing: "Thanks all for ur support. The winner this weekend was rugby its players & genuine supporters."

England scored seven tries to beat France, but their inability to overturn a 26-point deficit left Ireland as Six Nations champions.
