Scots want to be 'Grand Slam spoilers'

SIX NATIONS SPOTLIGHT: Scotland captain Stuart McInally insists his side will have plenty of motivation as they look to scupper Wales’ bid for a Six Nations Grand Slam at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The Scots are no longer in title contention following back-to-back defeats by Ireland and France.

But new skipper McInally said the desire not to let down their loyal home fans would provide inspiration.

“We can’t win the Championship but we can win tomorrow,” the Edinburgh hooker told reporters at Murrayfield on Friday.

“That’s all we’re focusing on.

“We’re at home and we don’t go down at home without a fight.

“There is an expectation from people that come and watch us and we love that. We love that pressure and we want to make sure we do everybody proud.”

Scotland launched their Championship campaign with a win at home to Italy before self-inflicted wounds, particularly in a 27-10 loss to France last time out, saw them slip down the table.

“We fell way below our standards in France and that was so disappointing. We expect so much more of ourselves,” McInally said.

“I don’t think there’s a lack of belief, we just need to be more accurate with the ball. We hope to do that tomorrow.”

McInally will lead out Scotland after coach Gregor Townsend took the bold decision to bench regular skipper Greig Laidlaw and recall Ali Price at scrumhalf.

But McInally expects Laidlaw to be the Scotland captain come this year’s World Cup in Japan.

“I got asked to be captain on Monday and I’m captain for this game. That’s all I’m thinking about.

“Greig has been excellent. He’s embraced his role from the bench this week and he’s respected that’s what the coaches want. He’s helped me and we’ve had good chats.”
