Super Rugby is one of the southern hemisphere’s greatest rugby union competitions. This yearly tournament is contested by 12 teams from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Founded in 1996, the first iteration of this competition was known as Super 12. As the name suggests, it featured 12 teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In 2006, Super 12 was replaced by Super 14, when two additional teams joined the competition.

Since, the tournament has changed format many times. It took its current format in 2022, when it officially became known as Super Rugby Pacific.

Today, the annual Super Rugby season is contested using a round-robin format, with each team playing seven home matches and seven away matches. One of these matches takes place during a ‘Super Round,’ where all 12 teams play at one stadium over one weekend. As well as playing all of the other 11 teams once, each team also plays in three additional ‘rivalry games’.

Since 1996, New Zealand franchises have dominated the competition. The country has won 19 Super Rugby titles, outpacing South Africa (3) and Australia (4). Among the teams, the Crusaders are the most successful with 12 wins. They are followed by the Blues (3), Bulls (3) Brumbies (2) and Chiefs (2).
