Maku made the announcement on October 31 and bows out with a solitary Springbok cap (against Italy in 2010) to his name and also had the honour of representing the Emerging Boks in two matches,
The 30-year-old, who made his senior debut for the Blue Bulls in 2006, also had career stints with the Lions and EP Kings at both Super Rugby and Currie Cup levels, before returning to Loftus in 2013, where he filled a senior role in the team until his retirement this year.
Maku has not been lost to the Bulls or the sport that he has dedicated his life to. He has been appointed as the Bulls Super Rugby Franchise Coordinator, a role that will see him cement the relationship between the Bulls and their three franchise partners: Boland, Border and Pumas.
Barend van Graan, CEO of the Blue Bulls Company is excited about having a man of Maku's caliber joining the support team.
"Bandise [Maku] has always been an exceptional rugby player and a man that has not only contributed on the field, but also to the overall brand with his positive energy and unspoken leadership skills.
"We are truly excited about having him join the support team at Loftus, and firmly believe that he will not only immensely contribute to the Bulls but also to the game that he loves," van Graan said.
Maku took to social media at the end of November to thank everything for their support over the years.
"Officially retired player, thanks for all the support through the years, especially my family, friends and Wife. A few mentions, to KB and Alice for always making sure I was ready to play and game ready.
"To all the coaches that have believed in me through selection and support. My agents through the years Anthony Johnson and Dane Galley for always having my interest at heart. To all the sponsors, thank you for allowing to be associated with your brands.
"In the end I was just a kid from EC [Eastern Cape] that wanted to play with his friends. Rugby gave me the opportunity to do that, travel the world, meet new friends and grow as a person. Very content in my decision.Thank you all."
