After it was reported that captain Sam Cane will miss his team’s opener against the Highlanders with a back injury, the Waikato franchise confirmed that All Black prop Atu Moli will be out of action for the rest of the season.

Moli will have FAI surgery on both left and right hips for chronic hip dysfunction.

Meanwhile, wing Sam McNicol had ankle surgery last week to correct his anterior impingement and tidy joint surfaces. He will also be out for the rest of the season.

The Chiefs’ lock stocks have also been hit hard after Michael Allardice and Laghlan McWhannell sustained season-ending injuries.

Both have undergone surgery – Allardice a shoulder reconstruction and McWhannell surgery to perform a patellar tendon debridement.

Taranaki lock Tupou Vaa’i will join the Chiefs squad for the 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa Championship.
