Barrett commits to Crusaders

Barrett made his first Crusaders appearance in 2014 when the side faced England during its New Zealand tour.

He also came off the reserve bench against the Blues later that season.

Having debuted for the Canterbury provincial team that same year, he did enough to convince Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder that he deserved a spot in the 2015 squad.

Blackadder commented that Barrett has made the most of his opportunities this season.

“Scott is a talented young player, who has an exciting future ahead of him," said Blackadder.

"You could see straight away that he was going to be a great footballer and this season he has proved it.

"He has taken every opportunity he’s been given and is pushing some of the more experienced players in the team for game time.

"Scott has an exciting future ahead of him.”

The 22 year old, 1.98m lock says he is loving playing for the seven-time Super Rugby champions and it was an easy decision to sign up for a further two years.

“I have learnt so much in this environment and love playing for the Crusaders," said Barrett.

"Todd, the other coaching and management staff and the players have been fantastic in sharing their knowledge and are really supportive.

"It’s a great environment and it brings out the best in my rugby, so re-signing was an easy decision to make.”

Barrett has rugby in his blood.

His father, Kevin "Smiley" Barrett, played over 100 games for Taranaki and 33 matches for the Hurricanes in 1997 and 1998.

His older brother, Kane, played for Taranaki and the Blues, while Beauden plays for the Hurricanes and is also a current All Black.

Younger brothers Blake and Jordie have both represented Taranaki in age grade rugby and Jordie is currently in the Crusaders Rugby Academy.

Like his brothers, Scott played his schoolboy rugby for Francis Douglas Memorial College and was a standout performer in their first XV.

Scott has also played for the New Zealand Under-20.
