Brumbies call up Hyne for SA trip

The long-haired lock, who signed a Development Contract with the Brumbies, drove to Canberra from Brisbane to link with the Brumbies in late 2015, taking up an offer from head coach Stephen Larkham to participate in pre-season training in Canberra with the Super Rugby squad.

He played in the Brumbies opening trial match of 2016 against the Waratahs in February (Wagga Wagga) and his performance was impressive from the bench.

"Ben has been training with us since pre-season began back in November and we're really happy with his development," Larkham said.

"He's a talented player who has learnt a lot from the other forwards in our squad and will gain a lot from the trip to Africa."

Hyne first impressed Brumbies coaching staff when he represented eventual champions Brisbane City in the 2015 National Rugby Championship.

He scored a try in City's NRC win over the UC Vikings at Viking Park and went on to gain selection in the Australian Barbarians side that toured New Zealand in November.

The Rockhampton-product represented Queensland Country's Under-17 side in 2011 before he moved to Brisbane to play club rugby for Brothers.

He joins the Brumbies in South Africa as Ita Vaea continues his recovery from a serious finger injury suffered in the round two win over the Waratahs at GIO Stadium.

Hyne will be joined by Ruan Smith, James Dargaville and Michael Wells on the flight to South Africa before linking up with the Brumbies squad in Cape Town.
