Lucas, who signed for the Brumbies at the start of the 2018 season, has now played in over fifty Super Rugby matches and brings a huge amount of experience into the No.9 role having made his debut in the tournament in 2013.

After playing for the Waratahs, Lucas linked up with the Brumbies and made his bow for the ACT-based side in Tokyo in 2018 against the Sunwolves, showcasing the athleticism and delivery that have hallmarked his time in the Capital.

“I am delighted to have been able to extend my stay with the Brumbies,” Lucas commented.

“The Brumbies really is a fantastic environment in which to play your rugby and I’ve loved every minute so far. The playing group we’ve got here is something I don’t take for granted and I’m so grateful to be able to be a part of this team for at least another season.

“I’m so thankful for the support I’ve had from the club and the wider ACT community since arriving and I’m so excited to be able to continue playing in Brumbies colours.”

Lucas is part of a trio of scrumhalves at the team, including Wallaby international Joe Powell and former Junior Wallabies captain Ryan Lonergan, that complements each other with their differing skills-sets.

“Matt is a good footballer,” Brumbies coach Dan McKellar commented. “His point of difference is his left foot as he is a very good kicker and has a good clearance game with good control.

“He is a real competitor, plays well above his weight and is highly respected throughout the group. Matt understands and knows the game well and contributes well on and off the field. We are fortunate to have someone of Matt’s experience.”
