Cheetahs lose stalwart Daniller

Cheetahs fullback Hennie Daniller has been ruled out of action with an injury picked up in the thrilling victory over the Waratahs last weekend.

The 28-year-old has a broken thumb picked up during the match, and could face a lengthy period on the sidelines, much like Sharks No.8 Ryan Kankowski did with a similar injury at the start of the season.

The Cheetahs have a bye this weekend, but Daniller will be in a race against time to be available for the remaining Super Rugby matches after the June break.

Cheetahs team doctor Ian Morris confirmed to this website that Daniller had a break at the base of his thumb, and had surgery on Monday.

Morris believes that Daniller will be out for the next six weeks, and the big fullback has an outside chance of taking on the Stormers on July 7, but is more likely to play the final regular season match against the Sharks on July 14.

The Cheetahs no longer have Riaan Viljoen available to them, and in Daniller's absence coach Naka Drotské is likely to move Willie le Roux to fullback – which is his preferred playing position.
