Chiefs desperate for Blues scalp

The Chiefs title hopes are still alive as they face the Blues on Friday, the equation is simple – win to progress.

As the double defending champions the Chiefs will be desperate to get into a position where they can compete for a third consecutive title.

The New Zealand conference is extremely tight as it stands, with all teams holding a mathematical chance of play-off rugby.

Chiefs co-captain and All Black flyhalf Aaron Cruden has only known success at the Chiefs – with two titles in two years.

"It's really nice to know that the season's still alive, we knew it was do or die last weekend and it's going to be the same this weekend," Cruden said.

The Blues have to win by 38 points to make the playoffs, as unlikely as that is.

"I'd say they'll throw the ball around, try to apply a bit of pressure – they'd be mad not to so it's going to make for a hell of a game isn't it," said Chiefs coach Dave Rennie.

Rennie went on to talk about his team super-star, Brodie Retallick who runs out for his 50th Super Rugby game on Friday.

After completely dominating the Hurricanes last weekend – the player dubbed the best lock in the world by his coach will need to do the same against the Blues in their sudden-death clash.

Retallick was a spectator at training, but he'll be fit for Friday.

Rennie says the big lock's presence is crucial to the Chiefs' hopes of keeping their title defence alive.

"You could term him as one of the best players in the world," the coach said

"He's phenomenal, Brodie – he's just incredibly consistent, massive work ethic, so he's playing great footy."

Retallick is pleased to get that kind of praise from his coach.

"I guess it's good to hear the coach thinks of you like that, hopefully it means I can get a start on Friday night," Retalick responded

Of that there is no doubt, though the news isn't as good for centre Charlie Ngatai.

His sore shoulder could see the return of Robbie Fruean.
