Coronavirus threatens Super Rugby

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Super Rugby matches involving the Tokyo-based Sunwolves are at risk of cancellation due to outbreak of the coronavirus in Japan.

The news comes after Japan have suspended its football league (J-League) and the table tennis world championships in South Korea were moved in a bid to stem the outbreak.

Rugby has already been affected by the coronavirus, with the upcoming Hong Kong and Singapore Sevens tournaments postponed until October and the Global Rapid Rugby matches in China postponed.

And it seems like Super rugby can become the latest sporting victim of the deadly virus.

According to Brisbanetimes, SANZAAR has been closely monitoring the increasingly serious situation in Asia and is ready to act if necessary at short notice. Consultation has been had with the World Health Organisation.

“SANZAAR is cognisant of what is happening and taking advice from medical authorities and government but at this stage it’s business as usual,” a spokesperson told the Herald.

SANZAAR officials have a board meeting early next month where they will discuss the issue, however one would expect contingency plans to be put in place if the spread of the virus continues.

The Japan-side are away to the Hurricanes in Napier this weekend before hosting a clash against the Brumbies on March 8 in Osaka before facing the  Crusaders (March 14), Queensland Reds (April 5) and NSW Waratahs (May 8) at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, the Six Nations fixture between Italy and England could be moved following the cancellations of football and Pro14 matches in Italy, which reported its seventh death on Monday.
