Force's Ruru becomes a Rebel

Ruru starred for the Force at halfback this season, stepping up after an injury to Ryan Louwrens early in the season, before a hamstring injury ended his NRC campaign prematurely.

The scrumhalf, signed on a two-season deal, follows front rows Ben Daley, Jermaine Ainsley, Tetera Faulkner, locks Adam Coleman, Matt Philip and Ross Haylett-Petty, back row Richard Hardwick, flyhalf Jono Lance, centre Billy Meakes and fullback Dane Haylett-Petty in moving across the country to join the Rebels, as well as coach Dave Wessels.

Wessels said Ruru's commitment was a cornerstone of his success this season.

"Mike hasn’t always had things his own way and has really lived in the real world over the last few years – his recent success is driven by his enthusiasm and work ethic," he said.

"He is a genuine competitor that will be very good for our group,"

Ruru joins Will Genia and Nic Stirzaker as the halfback stocks at the Rebels, in what will become a hotly-contested spot, but said he was going to embrace it.

"There’s a lot of quality players in the squad, especially in the halfback role, so I know it’s going to be a huge challenge and competition for game day positions but I’ll bring my energy and passion to Melbourne," he said.

"With the challenge comes the opportunity for me to continue my development in an elite rugby program under world-class coaches which will drive better players and standards,"
