Get rid of Conference system says Read
SUPER RUGBY SPOTLIGHT: All Blacks and Crusaders captain Kieran Read wants the Super Rugby conference system to be axed.
Super Rugby’s popularity has fallen steadily since the controversial conference system was introduced back in 2011.
Read has become the latest high-profile name to criticise the current format.
“I like the idea of a full round robin where you play everyone once, but we can’t continue with this conference system moving forward,” Read told RadioLIVE.
There is the possibility of further expansion in Super Rugby with the introduction of a Pacific Island team in the future. However, Read believes a better format is needed before more teams are introduced.
“They have to work something out there before expansion. A round robin or something along those lines would be fairer for everyone and result in a better product for the fans who turn up every week,” Read said.
Earlier this year Chiefs head coach Colin Cooper spoke out about the number of New Zealand derby matches in each season.
He was concerned that the brutal nature of these matches was creating more injuries.
