Gill citing piles misery on Reds
The Reds' season went from bad to worse, after flank Liam Gill was cited for an act of foul play in their 0-29 loss to the Brumbies in Brisbane on Saturday.
The loss has left the Reds second from last on the standings.
Gill is charged with having contravened 10.4 (j): Lifting Tackle.
The incident, which occurred in the 47th minute of the Super Rugby match between the Reds and Brumbies, saw Gill lift Brumbies scrumhalf Nic White beyond the horizontal and flip him over in a dangerous fashion.
The referee for the match, Andrew Lees, referred the incident to the television match official and issued a yellow card.
Upon further review of the match footage, the citing commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.
The citing is to be considered in the first instance by SANZAR judicial officer Robert Stelzner.
All SANZAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to a judicial officer hearing to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.
For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the judicial officer.
Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham was blunt about the tackle, speaking after the game.
"It's just a reckless, dangerous infringement," he said.
"What concerned me was he was upside down and he got thrown to the ground and he's a scrumhalf who's meant to be protected."
