Highlanders bolster squad

The Highlanders have added Tasman flyhalf Marty Banks, experienced lock Alex Ainley and Taranaki flyer Waisake Naholo to their 2015 Super Rugby squad.

Ainley, a hardworking lock who has been in the engine room of a successful Tasman forward pack this season, returned to New Zealand in 2013 after spending three seasons in Japan with the Dynabours.

Banks comes into the squad at flyhalf, who has scored 145 points for Tasman this season, heads south after a season with the Hurricanes.

Naholo, who made over 700 metres and scoring some highlight-reel worthy tries, has been released from his contract with the Blues to head to the Highlanders.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph said he was looking for players who would add to the franchise's environment, as well as contribute on the field.

"All these guys have great character and will add value to the team. Ainley's experience and uncompromising play will be a great asset up front and Naholo and Banks will help round out [our] backline stocks," he said.

The Highlanders also confirmed they have been in talks with Hawke's Bay wing Ryan Tongia but said nothing has been signed yet while Southland midfielder Willis Halaholo has been linked with the Hurricanes.
