Hurricanes wing wants to play for Boks
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Hurricanes wing Kobus van Wyk still hopes to play for the Springboks one day.
The South African joined the Hurricanes ahead of the start of the 2020 season from the Sharks after playing six years of Super Rugby for the Stormers and the Durban side.
Van Wyk, 28, had a stunning debut for the Wellington-based side earlier this year when he scored a hat-trick against the Sunwolves. His current record stands at four tries in three outings for his team before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With New Zealand’s Super Rugby Aotearoa beginning soon, Van Wyk is hoping he can extend his stay in Wellington for another couple of seasons.
“I’m feeling right at home with the boys.” Van Wyk told allblacks.com.
“It had been an awesome few months leading up to Covid-19, so I think my agent and the Hurricanes are busy with the contract for next year and maybe a two-year deal, so I’m just waiting on that.
“In another week or two we’ll sort that out.”

Despite being in New Zealand, Van Wyk still wants to fulfil his dream of playing for the Boks one day.
“It’s been a childhood dream basically from when I first had a rugby ball in my hand.
“For now, it’s all about playing some great footy for the Hurricanes and stamping my mark on the number 14 jersey,” he added.
Van Wyk revealed that it was his connection with former Sharks coach John Plumtree that got him to New Zealand.
“We still keep in contact. He comes around with his bike when he gets bored at home to have a coffee. He’s a good guy,” said Van Wyk.
