Kings' Parkes to undergo surgery

The Southern Kings' New Zealand back Hadleigh Parkes will undergo surgery, after breaking his arm in three places.

Parkes suffered the injury setback in the first half of the Kings' 30-46 loss to the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday,

Southern Kings Director of Rugby Alan Solomons said Parkes had been immediately taken to the hospital for x-rays after coming off the field in the 29th minute of the game.

"He has broken his arm in three places and is being operated on tonight [Saturday night NZ time] before returning home [to Port Elizabeth]," he said.

Solomons said the team would be looking at the overall fitness levels of the players back home and would be calling up a player as a matter of urgency.

"We have to assess the state of fitness of all potential candidates.

"We have had feedback on the performance of the team against Western Province and will be looking at who to call up as a matter of urgency.

"We need to do that tomorrow [Sunday] and the player has to fly to Sydney tomorrow," he added.

Solomons said scrumhalf Shaun Venter had a bruised ankle and lock David Bulbring had come off for a tight hamstring, but that for the most part the players were suffering the usual bumps and bruises from the game.

He said a full assessment of all the players’ fitness would be done Sunday.
