Kings to hold onto Petersen?

South African Under-20 wing Sergeal Petersen may be high up on the Cheetahs' wish-list, but they are a long way off on a formal agreement.

Media reports have suggested that the Cheetahs have signed Petersen for next year's Super Rugby competition on a loan deal.

However, the Port Elizabeth-based franchise denied that any agreement is in place.

Eastern Province Rugby CEO Charl Crous said on Tuesday they have nor discussed anything with the Cheetahs.

"We have always said that we would assist our players to secure Super Rugby experience in the build up to our re-entry to Super Rugby in 2016," said Crous.

"In the case of Sergeal Petersen, we have been informed by his agent that the Cheetahs are interested in securing his services for next year, but we have not yet had any discussions with them – let alone finalised any loan agreement," he said.

"The announcement that Sergeal will be going to play for them is extremely premature," he said.

Petersen will certainly stay with the Kings for the Currie Cup for 2014 and 2015, but should his loan deal with the Cheetahs become reality, he will feature alongside Springboks Willie le Roux and Cornal Hendricks in a very impressive backline.

The Cheetahs will lose a host of backline players at the end of the year – Johan Goosen (to Racing Métro), Hennie Daniller (Zebre), Riaan Smit (Oyonnax) and Kevin Luiters (ironically to the Kings).
