Highlanders and All Blacks star Liam Squire will be out of action for eight to ten weeks.
Squire picked up the injury during training late last week.
Highlanders head coach Aaron Mauger said Squire has torn the medial ligament in his knee.
“It is a terrible blow for him. The guy has worked so hard to get back to where he is.
“These things happen in rugby and unfortunately they have happened to a guy who has already had a bit of adversity this year.
“He has had some poor luck all right.”
