Lions are simply irresistible

SUPER RUGBY SPOTLIGHT: New signing Wilhelm van der Sluys revealed that he jumped at the opportunity to represent the Lions.

Van der Sluys joined the Johannesburg-based franchise this week, from Exeter Chiefs.

The 27-year-old signed for the Premiership side in 2017, following a stint with Southern Kings.

“Playing at Exeter Chiefs was a great experience,” Van der Sluys told reporters in Johannesburg, adding: “It’s a professional environment.

“Being away from home, out of my comfort zone, I learned about myself and about the game.

“From a forward’s perspective, you learn quite a lot about set-pieces – line-outs and scrums.

“I would say [the Premiership] is very technical. In Super Rugby you have some teams where it’s just ball in and away – you get the ball out because you want to play.”

“Having said that, I’m excited to be back in South Africa.

“The Lions play an attractive brand of rugby – which I certainly like,”

Van der Sluys is focused on delivering only the best for the Lions.

“South Africa is very blessed at the moment when it comes to locks. There are a few good guys playing over here.

“But for me, it’s just I got an opportunity at a great union like the Lions.”
