Massive blow for Lions
INJURY UPDATE: The Lions received some bad news on the injury of inspirational leader Warren Whiteley.
Lions team doctor Rob Collins confirmed that “Whiteley has a torn pectoralis major muscle (left) which he sustained in his team’s Super Rugby match against the Stormers in Cape Town over the weekend. The tendon is intact”.
According to Collins, Whiteley is expected to recover in in six to eight weeks.
Whiteley’s absence is a massive blow for the Johannesburg side and leadership could be a problem for the Lions going forward.
Vice-captain Elton Jantjies is set to lead the team while Whiteley is on the sidelines and the 28-year-old flyhalf is not known for his leadership abilities.
After starting their campaign with a 25-16 win over the Jaguares, the Lions were edged 17-19 by the Stormers in Cape Town in Round Two of Super Rugby 2019.
The Lions will face the Bulls at Ellis Park in Round Three.
