Pocock to reveal future plans
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: One of Australia’s most beloved sons David Pocock is expected to announce his retirement from Australian Rugby.
The Brumbies and Wallaby star has been on the park for only 138 minutes in three appearances through 11 rounds this season after struggling to overcome a calf injury.
The flank sustained the injury during round four clash against the Rebels and it seems like a return is highly unlikely with just three matches left in the regular season.
According to Rugbycomau. Pocock will address the media on Tuesday to confirm that this will be his final season with the Brumbies.
The website also stated that the flank is likely to return to the Japanese Top League’s Wild Knights after the World Cup, fulfilling the final element of a three-year flexible contract he signed back in 2016.
The 77-test Pocock is renowned as one of the world’s best fetchers but has struggled with a string of serious injuries since returning from a sabbatical last season.
Last week, Brumbies coach Dan McKellar admitted Pocock may already have played his final Brumbies match with the World Cup the ultimate goal for the breakaway.
“The Brumbies medical staff and the Wallabies medical staff will have a chat over the next few days and we’ll come to some sort of clarity there around where he heads over the next few weeks,” he said.
Asked if the injury would end Pocock’s season, McKellar said: “It’s all the things we’ve got to look at to see whether he plays Super Rugby or whether he now puts his attention towards the World Cup. Those are things we’ve got to discuss between the Brumbies and the Wallabies.”
