Read blow for Crusaders
The Crusaders' hopes of resurrecting their Super Rugby campaign was dealt a cruel blow.
All Black No.8 Kieran Read has been sidelined again with concussion and will not play when the seven-time champions host the hard-charging Brumbies in Christchurch on Saturday.
Read failed to convince medical staff that he had fully recovered from the head knock that forced him to leave the field against the Chiefs a fortnight ago.
It is the second time this season Read has had to withdraw because of a head injury.
he also failed a concussion test during the March 28 match against the Hurricanes and missed the fixture against the Lions a week later.
The Crusaders are currently eighth on the standings, just two points outside the last play-off spot – occupied by the Waratahs.
However, the Brumbies have been impressive for most of the season and their 41-23 demolition job on the defending-champion Chiefs last week moved them into second place on the global standings – just one point behind the table-topping Sharks.
The Crusaders will be buoyed by the news that All Black captain Richie McCaw, who hasn't played in two months since fracturing his left thumb against the Blues at Eden Park, will be available.
Assistant coach Dave Hewett hinted that McCaw could be named on the bench, but Read's loss may [prompt them to start McCaw at No.8.
Matt Todd is likely to retain the openside position.
McCaw is also more versatile and can cover blindside flank or No.8.
