Rugby Union back at SCG after 34 years

The Super Rugby clash on April 14 marks a return to the famous sporting venue that last hosted teams from the two states 34 years ago.

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said the significance of the venue was not lost on his team.

"None of our playing squad members were even born the last time NSW and Queensland played at the SCG," he said.

Reds coach Brad Thorn added: "The SCG has played a big part in Australian sporting history across a number of football codes.

"It will be a special occasion for our team when they face the Waratahs there in April."

A 28-4 win by NSW in the first game against Queensland in 1882 sparked a rivalry that has spanned more than 130 years, pre-dating other great Australian sporting traditions like the Ashes cricket series and Rugby League's State of Origin.
