Samoan bad boy a big Chief

He may be persona non grata  in his own country, but Samoan World Cup captain Mahonri Schwalger remains a popular figure with the Chiefs in New Zealand.

The controversial hooker, who was axed from the Samoan team after criticising officials for their behaviour at last year's World Cup, has re-signed with the Chiefs.

Schwalger, who is in arguable the best form of his career, has agreed to a two year contract with the Hamilton-based franchise.

Coach Dave Rennie said Schwalger's "wealth of experience, skill and leadership qualities" are highly valuable to his team.

"His influence on the development of our young tight forwards has been huge," Rennie said.

"He is in great form and still has plenty to offer our franchise."

The 32-year-old Schwalger is happy with his decision to stay with the current Super Rugby competition leaders.

"I'm really enjoying my rugby, the coaching and the Chiefs environment.  The body feels great and I know I still have plenty of good rugby left to play."

Schwalger has played in three World Cups and captained Samoa in their historic win against the Wallabies in 2011.
