SBW's return to bolster tiny Chiefs
The Chiefs, who have had success on the backs of big, powerful centers will be looking forward to the return of one of the best in the business – Sonny Bill Williams.
After bowing out off Super Rugby 2014 with a tight loss to the Brumbies, 32-30, the Chiefs can now focus their attention on next year and the return of Williams.
Although the Chiefs were happy to receive a good luck message via video from the code hopper before the match, the side would have prefered to have the All Black there in person and realise that he could be the thing that was missing all season.
"Sonny sent a message to the boys wishing them all the best and obviously we're looking forward to getting him back," Rennie said.
"We're a pretty small backline without him and Richard Kahui [who left for Japan at the end of last season].
"We brought Robbie Fruean in to perhaps do that job for us but it hasn't eventuated."
The Chiefs backs, while full of skill, can hardly be called physically dominant – Aaron Cruden, Tim Nanai-Williams, Dwayne Sweeney, Bundee Aki and Gareth Ascombe are not your typical, bruising backs that push over the gainline with ease.
Whereas Williams' Bulky figure and size will provide the much needed physical force in the back line as the Chiefs rebuild.
"To have Sonny back next year will give us a little bit of size.
"We'll look forward to that, it allows you to play a different style of game," said Rennie.
