Sharks' stars under pressure to keep up the standard
SPOTLIGHT: Captain Lukhanyo Am believes the big names in the Sharks squad will feel the pressure ahead of the next few games after some eye-catching performance by the youngsters.
Some of the Sharks’ more experienced players were not involved in the first two preparation series matches against Griquas and the Cheetahs. It allowed head coach Sean Everitt to test his depth in certain positions and it has proved to be fruitful.
The Durban side beat Griquas 35-10 in Durban before narrowly losing 38-39 to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. In both games, some of the youngsters in the Sharks squad stepped up to the challenge and produced some impressive performances.
“They played amazing rugby,” said Am. “I was quite impressed by what they brought in terms of the energy and they showed the DNA of the team.
“I think there will be a lot of pressure with the changes and the guys coming in to try and keep [up] that standard.”

Am added: “We will try and keep the standards. I think coach Sean saw that we do have depth in the squad and definitely knows what the guys can bring on the field.”
The Sharks captain believes the opportunities the youngsters got over the last few weeks will only strengthen the whole squad ahead of the Rainbow Cup.
“It has given the guys who didn’t get much game time a chance to gel and try new combinations. Also, to test our depth to see what we have.
“I think it was very influential to the squad and it would make the coach’s decision much easier going forward,” Am added.
Kolisi adapting well
Meanwhile, Am said Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is adapting well to life in Durban.
Kolisi was unveiled as a Sharks player last month after 11 years with Western Province and the Stormers.
“He has gelled in quite nicely. I think he brings a lot of energy in the camp and I am looking forward to playing with him in the black and white jersey,” said Am.
The Sharks will face the Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday.
