VIDEO: Stormers bully Jaguares at Newlands
SUPER RUGBY REPORT: The Stormers recorded their third win in a row after beating the Jaguares 35-8 at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday.
The home side outscored their opponents by four tries to one to secure a valuable bonus point as well.
With this latest win the Stormers have now climbed to second in the South African Conference. They will now travel to Australasia for a four-week tour which starts with a match against the Hurricanes in Wellington on March 23.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring with Bautista Delguy sprinting in for the first try in the fifth after some great continuity on attack inside the Stormers’ half.
The Stormers got more of the ball after that score and they reduced the deficit to just two points in the 13th minute with an SP Marais penalty from a tight angle.
It was then a mistake in the Jaguares’ 22 that allowed the Stormers to score their first try of the game. Delguy failed to hold onto a ball from a kick after clashing with a teammate and Stormers centre Daniel du Plessis was on hand to pick up the loose ball and run in for the try.
After the first 20 minutes, the home sidewas leading 10-5.
However, the Jaguares found themselves a bit closer in the 26th minute via a Joaquin Diaz Bonilla penalty before Marais restored the five-point gap with a penalty of his own in the 35th minute.
The Stormers had the final say in the first half with another Marais penalty and at half-time the Stormers were leading 16-8.
The home side then extended their lead once again in the 47th minute when captain Siya Kolisi found his way to the tryline after a strong driving maul. Marais added the extras for a 14-point lead.
The Jaguares had opportunities to score and get back into the game but they were wasteful in strike some.
Instead, it was the Stormers who took full advantage of their opportunities with Herschel Jantjies darting through the Jaguares’ defence to score his team’s third try just before the 60-minute mark.
The home side then scored a fourth try via Justin Philips in the 78th minute which helped his team secure the bonus point.
Man of the match: Stormers captain Siya Kolisi led from the front with some strong carries and bone-crunching tackles. He also scored one of his team’s four tries, so he deserves the award.

For Stormers:
Tries: D du Plessis, Kolisi, Jantjies, Phillips
Cons: Marais 2, JL du Plessis
Pens: Marais 3
For Jaguares:
Try: Delguy
