Three-week ban for Hurricanes' South African wing
DISCIPLINARY UPDATE: Hurricanes wing Kobus van Wyk was suspended for three weeks on Friday, ruling him out of the final round of Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Van Wyk was hauled before the SANZAAR judiciary over a spear tackle on Brad Weber in Saturday’s 31-18 win over the Chiefs and pleaded guilty to the offence.
The judicial committee chairperson, Stephen Hardy, outlined that van Wyk’s indiscretion warranted a six-week suspension due to the recklessness of his offence.
However, van Wyk’s clean judicial record, early guilty plea and expression of genuine remorse resulted in his ban being cut back to three weeks.
It means the former Sharks wideman will sit out Saturday’s match against Highlanders in Dunedin.
